Artist Statement: Blanket of Belonging – My quilt shows that safety, community, and belonging are important for everyone. I drew my family, a farmers market, parks, a police station, and fire department to represent a caring and safe place. I also added different cultural traditions to show how different cultures make our community better. My colorful quilt is a reminder that when we respect and care for each other, everyone can feel safe and at home.

Artist Statement: “Roots of Unity” represents how a community comes together to form something beautiful. The heart at the bottom of the piece represents the values of a community, and the overlapping roots represent how people must work with one another to build community. At its roots are the dedicated public servants—police officers, firefighters, teachers, and others—who form the foundation of our everyday lives. The ecosystem nearby represents how all forms of life rely on communities to survive. Overall, this piece reflects the rich diversity of my community and reminds me that my home is not just a building, but it is the sense of safety and belonging created by the people who live and serve in it.

Artist Statement: This year’s theme is very timely, not only to my country but all for of corners of the world. The concept of drying clothes inspired my artwork, which for me resonates with the idea of celebration and simplicity. Celebration for me in a way that each member of my community has a vital role to play and performs from the blue-collar jobs to professionals like educators, doctors, lawyers, engineers, and many more. These people wake up every day with wisdom and benevolence to go through their lives. These people serve in many ways, whether in governmental to private institutions. Celebration of their unique stories of faith, hope, and love. The concept of drying clothes for me is simplicity I wanted to convey the concept of looking back to our old ways and routines of having a simple life that utilizes resources mainly found from our surroundings. Just like clothes hanging together in different places, diversity and tolerance should never be compromised as we people, member of a whole community is the basic unit and part of a whole called world.

Artist Statement: I made a mixed-media work of art that I titled “Money.” I like the contrast of realism with the photos and paint. Safety means money to me, because I’ve been poor most of my life. A lot of times we didn’t have enough to pay bills. Safety equals security. I do art for fun. Winning this contest would mean I would be able to fix my car, so I could find and hold a job a lot better.
